New Year, New You, New New New

new year new you

It’s that time of year again. The time where we can’t believe how quickly the year has gone by. The time where, after reflection, we begin to set goals. It’s a New Year, New You. Now, whether or not we follow through with those goals is another story. It’s a time where we, as a people, kinda-sorta try to get our stuff together.

The past few years, I feel like people have knocked New Year’s Resolutions. “Oh, I think it’s stupid to wait until January to do something.” “People should be doing those actions already. Stop tricking yourself into thinking the New Year will mean something different.” “New Year’s Resolutions? Hah. You fall off the horse barely a month in.”

But you know what?
I think those people are wrong.

The idea of a “New Year’s” Resolution appeals to our psyche. It’s an instance of a very clear “beginning” (in this case, of the year), that is recognized by all. We don’t often celebrate the beginning of each month, so the fact that we celebrate the beginning of a year gives more legitimacy to our plans. It’s the one time where it’s “ok” to share them with one another. We don’t feel shame or embarrassment in talking of our gym plans or about the novel we’re planning to write.

Why is that? Why is it that after all the glitz and glamour of the New Year wears off, we fall right back into the muck and drudgery of day-to-day life? It’s because of boredom, a lack of clearly defined goals (i.e. the lack of steps to get there), and from watching people give up around us. But why should we let those circumstances affect us? If you want to change your life, it is in YOUR power to! Take responsibility for your life, your dreams, and your intentions. Stop waiting and BUILD the kind of life you deserve!

5 STEPS TO MAKING YOUR NEW YEAR A SUCCESS

1. Take the time to know GRATITUDE

A lot of research in recent years has demonstrated the strength and healing power, both physically and emotionally, of practicing gratitude. A daily practice builds the foundation of self-love, which is necessary for any individual to grow or excel in life. It’s crazy to think that “positive thinking” can really affect our thoughts and behaviors so much, but it really is a case of mind over matter. Now, I’m not one to practice this. I’m actually pretty bad at maintaining a positive attitude sometimes, but after reading so many articles covering the benefits of gratitude, I’ve decided to make it a daily practice of mine in the New Year.

TRY IT: Get a dry erase marker and keep it in your bathroom. Every morning, write a new “I’m thankful…/I’m blessed…” statement on the mirror. Keep it in your mind throughout the day — it’ll not only make a positive impact on yourself, but on those you live with, as well!

2. Make SLEEP a priority

It’s not even funny what a good night’s sleep can do for you. Science tells us about it, Mom tells us, teachers tell us…over and over and OVER again, and yet, we like to stay up past midnight when six hours later we need to be up and running for school/work/kids/etc. again. WHY DO WE THINK THAT’S A GOOD IDEA?!

When you get enough sleep, your body can function how it’s meant to function. Your metabolism can run, your hunger is kept in check, and you have energy. A full night’s sleep cultivates a positive attitude, curiosity to try new things, increased productivity, and patience for all that’s around you. Not too bad, huh? So let’s make those eight hours a little more important.

TRY IT: Count back 8-9 hours from when you need to wake up in the morning (yes, even if that means going to bed at 9pm!). Turn it all off: the TV, your computer, your iPhone — set all your alarms you need in the morning, grab a book or a magazine, and crawl into bed. Now take a deep breath. You’re in your comfy bed, under a big, fluffy comforter! You can relax, ok? Unwind. Loosen your muscles, relieve the tension you carry in your body day to day. If you’d like, take a bath, drink a mug of decaf tea, or listen to some soothing music. Whatever you need to do to unwind — do it. The stimulation from electronics messes up our internal sleeping mechanisms, so the major point is to avoid them before bedtime. It’s ok to take a break from technology!

3. Pick your goals and MAP them out

What do you want to achieve this year? What do you finally want to make happen? Get a dry erase board, pad of paper, laptop, tablet — whatever helps you organize your thoughts best. Now pick a goal. What steps do you need to do to achieve that goal? List them all, whether or not you actually know how to do them. Create a map, a diagram, or whatever sort of visual helps you understand your step-by-step process to reach your goal. Maybe you are trying to lose weight or achieve better health. Your steps could include finding healthy recipes you may enjoy, walking or doing another sort of physical activity every day, figuring out ways to drink more water, adding some greens to each meal of the day, finding upbeat music to motivate your workouts, etc.

Use this diagram as a guideline. Adjust it as you go along. Scribble in additional steps, or scratch out ones that you try and end up not working. The purpose is to help you move closer to your goal, one step at a time.

TRY IT: Do a little bit each day. Whether it’s walking for 10 minutes, blogging for 30, playing piano scales for 15…do something. A little each day will get you further (and will be less daunting) than trying to do something for 3 hours one day a week. Besides, a little every day will keep you focused on your goal, as well as (assuming you’re passionate about what it is you’re pursuing) keep your spirits up.

4. VISUALIZE yourself and your success

When you allow yourself to go deeply into visualization, feeling the emotions you want to be feeling, viewing yourself as you wish to appear, your mind is not able to differentiate between that and reality. As you practice visualization more and more, your mind identifies your visions as reality, and your being as a whole is able to move more swiftly towards your goals of success. It takes a lot to visualize because a lot of times, we don’t allow ourselves to have what we really want. Perhaps we don’t find ourselves worthy, or we’re too embarrassed to indulge in those visions. Don’t let those feelings trump you! Engage in visualization as a tool to facilitate your dreams!

TRY IT: Take 5 minutes each day. Pick one goal you are pursuing. What are you doing? How do you look? How do you feel? Are you excited? Nervous? Proud? Do you feel brave? How do you look upon yourself? With grace? Gratitude? What are the emotions you are pursuing as you try to reach your goals? How do you want to feel? Do you feel that way? Be sure to push aside any negative thoughts or emotions. You don’t want to get trapped in the mind cycle of “I can’t do it. I’ll never get there. I’m not good enough.” Feel positive, feel hopeful, feel uplifted.

5. Share your journey with others and ENCOURAGE them in theirs

There’s nothing like being surrounded by likeminded individuals. You become a support group for one another, as well as a gold mine of information full of experience and dos and do-nots. Of course, on the flip side, it’s also a great challenge to be surrounded by the disbelief and negativity of people who think you’re going off the deep end. It’s ok. Let them think that. Be an example to those around you of what it looks like to pursue your dreams. Let people ask questions! Share your journey, the highs and the lows. Ask others what they are passionate about. Encourage them to make changes, step-by-step. We can revolutionize today’s society!

TRY IT: Keep a journal of your goal pursuits. You don’t need to update it every day (unless, of course, you want to) — shoot for once a week or so. Very quickly, this journal will become proof of the changes you have made and the success you are experiencing in the New Year.

Go forth in making your 2013 New Year’s Resolutions. I believe that you can succeed in them, so should you!

Places to Do: The Plant

The Plant Logo

I recently took the time to visit The Plant, a place that has begun to captivate an audience within the sustainable living crowd, as well as in various media outlets. It’s located in a building that used to be a 93,500 square foot meatpacking facility, just south of Chicago, in the economically distressed neighborhood, Back of the Yards.

WELCOME TO THE PLANT

the plant

The Plant is a culmination of various “businesses.” Technically speaking, it’s a vertical farm, but in reality, it’s so much more than that. The Plant is a net-zero energy facility; within the building, there is a “shared kitchen” and multiple tenants, and the waste of one becomes the fuel for another.

Aquaponics!

Current tenants include 312 Aquaponics, Greens & Gills (sustainably farmed fish and veggies by way of aquaponics), Skyygreens Aquaponics, Pleasant House Bakery, Peerless Bread & Jam, and Thrive Kombucha. The Plant is currently seeking a craft beer brewery to make their home in the building in order to complete the “closed loop” system. Once everything is in place, it will be completely off the energy grid: self-sufficiency at its finest!

Location for the brewery

SO HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

This is where things get interesting.

First of all, there are three principles on which environmental science is based on.
1) Reliance on solar energy
2) Biodiversity
3) Chemical cycling

It is these three principles that provide a natural and holistic way for the world (and those in it) to continue to thrive. If we begin to employ more techniques within each of these principles (i.e. gathering energy from the sun to warm houses or water, protection of various species, composting or recycling), we will pave the way for a more sustainable walk of life.

For The Plant, chemical cycling is where it’s at. Chemical cycling is when chemicals within the environment go through organisms and then back into the environment, and it occurs by natural processes. The earth never gets a new supply of these chemicals, so it’s important for the process to recycle itself as efficiently and thoroughly as possible.

The Plant’s energy conversion is primarily sourced by a machine called an anaerobic digester. Built from a jet engine, it’ll “eat” about 27 tons of food a day: the waste produced in the building, as well as some from neighboring companies. According to The Plant’s website, “The digester will capture all of the methane from that waste, and the methane will be burned in a combined heat and power system to produce…electricity, plus all the process heat needed for an onsite craft beer brewery. Excess heat will be used in an absorption chiller to regulate the building’s temperature.” The digester will divert about 5,000 tons of organic waste to be used for the different energy, without any other use of fossil fuels. In addition to providing its own heat and electricity, The Plant will be energy efficient.

BUT HOW DOES A MACHINE DO THAT? WHERE’S IT ALL COME FROM?

Within the digester are thousands of microorganisms. Those microorganisms breakdown biodegradable material, and the gas produced from that chemical process gets converted into electricity.

The biodegradable material comes from the tenants within the building. The Huffington Post breaks it down: “Fish feed on spent barley from the brewery, and plants feed on waste from the fish. Kombucha cultures feed off oxygen produced by plants, while plants feed off carbon dioxide produced by the kombucha cultures.” It’s a brilliant cycle that utilizes any and every waste possible.

A PROJECT IN ITS INFANCY

Back of The Plant

I had read a lot about The Plant prior to my visit and went with the notion that a lot of the concepts they spoke about were already implemented. To my surprise, however, the project is still in its very early stages. The brain child of John Edel, president of The Plant, is the first of its kind, so there is a lot more time and care needed in the acquisition (and creation) of city permits regarding the building, construction, marketing of food, health regulations, etc. I was fascinated with everything they have come forward with thus far though.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

As the world’s population rapidly grows, we are increasingly running out of space to grow food. The ability to harvest food not only indoors, but over multiple floors of space and on rooftops, changes our food security situation. If we are able to efficiently utilize buildings for growing fish and produce, then we can begin to tackle the hunger issues that are present in our very own communities.

On a larger scale, The Plant is trying to ensure a replicable business model. They will provide a “complete, free business case study on our website, including detailed financial and technical information (outline due 2012, full report due 2016),” as well as hosting seminars for the public, professionals, students, and educators to learn about energy, food, and sustainable living.

4 Ways to Keep From Self-Destructing This Holiday Season

Ah. The familiar glow of the WordPress screen is a welcome home to return to. Chaos in life has ensued for the past month. Work, school, people, places — it’s something that everyone has felt (or is feeling now!). I had it all together and then…

I didn’t.

To be honest, I got sick, and that’s what sent me spiraling downwards. I stopped eating well, hydrating myself, trying to get enough sleep, and got way too involved with worry, stress, and freaking out. But isn’t it funny how we can be doing so well, thinking we’ve finally figured it all out, only to be sorely proven wrong? The learning process is a challenging one, yet rewarding all the same.

And so I offer to you, 4 ways to stop yourself from self destructing this holiday season:

1) EAT THOSE GREENS!

This season is known for its delicious and decadent offerings. To enjoy just one is not only a challenge, but almost a crime (the season comes but once a year!). Despite knowing the negative effects sugar has on us and our bodies, however, we continue to indulge in bite after bite. And you know what? That’s ok. Don’t be ashamed for enjoying Mom’s special cake or one too many Christmas cookies with the kids. Look upon yourself gently and with kindness. Make sure, though, that you eat, or drink rather, your greens.

A green smoothie will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function and process all of those rich goodies properly. Not only that, it will help satiate your hunger, and ultimately, if your body is feeling satisfied, you will be less likely to feel the need to overindulge.

I learned the hard way these past few weeks. As soon as I started putting fresh foods and lots of water into my body, I felt exponentially better, slept more easily, and lost a lot of bloating I had going on.

My favorite green smoothie recipe is:

Half your mixer full of baby spinach
A banana (frozen is even better)
1/2 cup of organic raw pumpkin seeds
1 teaspoon of spirulina
Chia seeds and flax seeds as you like
Organic vanilla almond milk
A couple of ice cubes

Blend and enjoy!

2) TAKE SOME “ME” TIME

When was the last time you took a second between baking for the holiday parties, finishing up finding the perfect gifts, pet sitting for your neighbor (you owe her!), prepping for that final report, and stressing about completing all of your work before that single day of “vacation?”

That’s what I thought.

Clear up a day in your schedule. Or just work half a day, even. It’s YOUR schedule, you have that control.

Now tell all of those things that are competing for your time and attention to shush.
Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Now ask yourself, “what would nurture my soul right now?” “What am I passionate about that would make me happy to do or think about?” “What have I been dying to do, but just haven’t had the chance?”

When you answer those questions honestly, you will make yourself so much happier, simply by experiencing something you love.

- Treat yourself to lunch and a romantic novel in hand
- Go see that one movie you’ve been dying to see (or two)
- Snag a spa or massage deal and drift off into wonderland
- Paint a picture (or color in a coloring book…this may or may not be a guilty pleasure and stress reliever of mine)
- Walk through a forest, nature center, or conservatory. Smell that earth!
- Do a puzzle with a glass (or more) of wine
- Bury yourself in books at Barnes & Noble or your local bookshop
- Take a bubble bath (complete with glowing candle light), wrap yourself in your comfiest robe or most luxurious pajamas, and enjoy a mug of hot chocolate in bed (even a little afternoon nap!)
- Treat yourself to a little gift of your choice (I am addicted to Abe’s Market and now, Pure Citizen)
- Take yourself to that cool museum exhibit. One is never to old to hang out at the Science and Industry museum!

Whatever it is…make the choice to do it, be present, and give yourself permission to enjoy it! There is not much purpose in living life if it’s always going to be miserable. So give yourself a grand ol’ time! (P.S. Turn your phone off. The world won’t go to hell if you’re unavailable for a few hours)

3) GO TO THAT YOGA CLASS

Even though you’re not really in the mood anymore and you can name a hundred thousand other things you could get done in those same 90 minutes.

Shh. Just go.

The peace you find on the mat is unmatchable. No matter how much chatter is going on in your mind when you begin the class, somewhere between your second or third downward dog and the instructor’s slow, repetitious reminders of inhaling and exhaling, everything gets released. You know how good you feel after a class, so just go.

4) JOURNAL YOUR FEELINGS

Especially the ones you’re avoiding acknowledgement of. Like right now.

Write what you’re feeling. Read it to yourself. Let it sink in. You feel tired/cranky/pissed/sad/overwhelmed/excited/whatever. It’s ok to feel that and it’s good to feel that, whether the emotion is positive or negative. Both are necessary for balance in life. Appreciate both. Allow yourself to experience each emotion.

Now ask yourself why? Not in a judgmental manner, but in one of curiosity. Why do I feel overwhelmed right now? It is because I feel like I have to live up to the expectations of others? Is it because there are other things I’d much rather be doing? Identify why you are feeling what you’re feeling.

Take a big, deep, full belly breath in through your nose, then slowly let it out. Now do it again. Each time you breathe out, let go of the emotions that are bogging you down.

You are beautiful.
You are perfect.
The present is all you have right now.

ENJOY IT :)
